At first this was beyond comprehension...But I heard it on radio the other day...I do like the 80's 90's feel of her version...She does not take away from the message...and even adds a dance beat to it.I never liked the remakes of Can't Help Falling In Love, the Elvis song...that was a hit (I can't even name the group) But This may be my fave Madonna song...Never was a big fan, but she did a good version of American Pie...She did not destroy the lyrics and message...I think Don MacLean would like it...

Terry,

I must disagree on this one.

I hate the song, but confess I don't generally like remakes, especially of signature songs. Am also not much of a Madonna fan, except for the Papa Don't Preach video -- and it has very little to do with her -- and her performance in Desperately Seeking Susan.

Aside from changing/deleting lyrics, which to me killed the song's message, I thought the dance beat spoiled the poignancy and haunting tone.

I agree with kelly - there are some songs that are true classics that should not be re-made - "American Pie" is one of them.

I see your points completely. I am surprised that she did not rip up the song, but the verses were close to the original, with just a gen x beat.

Everytime the Madonna version played on the radio I changed stations or turned off the radio.

Madonna's cover of "American Pie" was a decent attempt from the original; however, she gutted most of the song musically with her eletronica music. I would've bought the single had it not been an UK import. She should've included "american pie" on the US version of her second Greatest Hits CD too. Another reason why I didn't buy that album.

Madonna has turned into an elitist snob, but she has good musical moments. Too bad her best album was Ray of Light from 1998. Music was a terrible album. Why did she use the vocoder throughout this album? It's annoying.

Try something else Madonna.

Love Madonna - HATE American Pie (except for the video) and I disagree with DD re. Music ( I Deserve It and Nobody's Perfect aside - pass the sick bag). However - you guys must send some sort of US special force to get her out of the UK, much as I hate to say it. She's picking up on the crappiest, most superficial, snobbiest bits of Brit-culture whereas her biggest asset for me was always that whole "Michigan girl who ran off to New York" vibe. OK - she has to be allowed to grow up but she's losing the plot. Elocution lessons? Sending Lourdes to Cheltenham Ladies School? GET A GRIP GIRL!

If you like country Garth Brooks also did a version of American Pie that I think is good.

BTW Don Maclean loved Madonna's version.

Madonna did a much better version than the Brady Bunch.
