They had some #2 songs, but isn"t that amazing, that any of their CLASSIC songs never made #1...AWESOME...

If it's any comfort, Creedence Clearwater Revival hit no. 1 in the UK with Bad Moon Rising (a perennial hallowe'en fave) in 1969. If you had another Creedence in mind please chalk it up to me being 40 ;)

I am not all that sure but I thnk John Fogerty had a no#1 as a solo artist.

John Fogerty/CCR is/are one of my all-time favorites, only I was too young to appreciate them in the 60's :)

One of my favorite videos from MTV was Fogerty's "Vance Can't Dance" -- not only was it one of the first Claymation videos, but "Vance" was a former manager and the song was all about his wicked ways ... he even ended up suing Fogerty over it (I believe the song was pulled).

As far as not having a #1 hit, you don't need to in order to be #1 in my book
